Important Update to Asthma Treatment Plans for some patients

Posted on:

We are contacting some of our patients who are prescribed an inhaler to inform them via a text message of an important update in asthma care that will affect their current treatment. Based on the most recent international and national guidelines, patients with asthma who have been using a Short-Acting Beta-Agonist (SABA) inhaler (such as salbutamol/blue inhaler) alone are now advised to switch to a combination inhaler known as an Anti-Inflammatory Reliever (AIR) for better control of symptoms and long-term lung health.

Why This Change?

Recent evidence shows that relying on a SABA-only inhaler may not effectively control inflammation in the airways and can increase the risk of severe asthma attacks. In contrast, the AIR approach combines a reliever (fast-acting bronchodilator) with an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that treats the underlying inflammation — offering both immediate relief and ongoing protection.

What Is AIR Therapy?

AIR stands for Anti-Inflammatory Reliever and typically uses a combination inhaler containing formoterol (a fast-acting bronchodilator) and budesonide (an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid). You can use this inhaler both as needed for symptoms and, in some cases, daily for maintenance, depending on your asthma severity and your doctor’s advice.

Benefits of AIR:

  • Fewer asthma attacks and emergency visits
  • Better long-term lung health
  • Convenience: one inhaler for both relief and prevention
  • Reduced need for daily medication in some patients

What You Need to Do:

You do not need to do anything as we will arrange for the inhaler change to be reflected on your repeat medications list. You will just need to order this when next required. You will be issued with a new care plan with your new inhaler.

You can find further information on the Asthma and Lung UK website, including inhaler technique for your new device.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact reception to arrange a telephone appointment with a respiratory nurse or dispensary.

This update is part of our commitment to providing you with the most effective and evidence-based care for your asthma.

We look forward to supporting you in this transition and helping you achieve better asthma control.
